苏州大学的英文现在统一翻译成Soochow University,就是为了纪念其前身东吴大学。
苏州大学前身为东吴大学，始建于1900年。1952年东吴大学与苏南文化教育学院和江南大学数理系合并，同年定名为江苏师范学院。1982年改名苏州大学。1995年、1997年和2000年4月，苏州蚕桑专科学校、苏州丝绸工学院和苏州医学院又先后并入该校。到目前为止，苏州大学已发展成为一所拥有哲学、经济学、法学、理学、医学等11大学科门类的综合大学，被列为国家“211工程”重点建设高校和江苏省重点大学。
